Customized Rings for a Last-Minute Wedding
I don’t think it’s hyperbole to say that San Francisco one of the most beautiful City Hall Buildings. We def have one of the tallest. The words “City Hall wedding” normally conjure up sad, dull, bureaucratic office spaces, lit with fluorescent bulbs, and performed with lackluster attention by a harried public servant. But not here. Here you get gorgeous Tennessee pink marble floors, a sweeping grand staircase, golden cupola*, and perfect natural lighting. Every year, when I go to City Hall to renew my business license, one of the perks is looking around at all of the couples filing through for their meaningful, expressive and intimate weddings. Dresses are fun and less formal, suits are colorful, or done away with altogether, flower arrangements are bright and unique, and all of the couples seem to be glowing and joyful.
This last Fall I had the honor of creating custom wedding rings for Stephanie and Brian just in time for their San Francisco City Hall wedding. Stephanie is a fellow maker (and friend!) with a love of sleek design. She fell in love with the Cigar Band in 14 karat gold, but was concerned about how the width of would feel over the years - would it be too constrictive or would it feel too tight? So instead she opted for a customized narrow version of this ring in 14 karat yellow gold with recycled diamonds. Brian opted for one of the woodland wedding bands in a customized 4.5mm width and in 14 karat Palladium white gold** - the perfect mix of rugged texture, substantial width, and a fine, steely color.
Then came the process of sourcing the gold for their rings. As many of you already know, recycling gold is totally my jam, because recycling gold makes your ring even more sustainable. To maximize the eco-chic nature of the wedding ring making process, we took some of her family’s old, unworn and unused gold jewelry, melted it down and applied the scrap as credit towards their rings. She loved that the cutout of her ring could fit around a solitaire, or even stand on its own as a design choice. On my end, it was fun for to create the narrower 6mm width (the original ring measures 10mm and can be found here). I loved it so much in fact, that I decided to introduce it as a regular part of the collection. I should really call it The Stephanie!
*No, seriously. The dome of City Hall is COVERED in 23 karat gold leaf. It is fucking magnificent.
**Palladium white gold contains no nickel and is the perfect choice for anyone concerned about a possible nickel allergy. This year, I am turning away entirely from regular white gold and only offering Palladium White Gold.
